I-CARE thanks you for your continued support. In addition to funding the Autism Resource Center, your contributions have helped to make the following workshops possible:
March 2004 - Elimination of Problem Behaviors through Excellent Teaching Procedures conducted by Tamara Kasper, BCBA/SLPK Parents and therapists are often faced with difficult cases in which valuable therapy time is spent addressing challenging behaviors such as avoidance, aggression or self-stimulation. Participants in this workshop will learn strategies from the field of Applied Behavior Analysis which are used to analyze behavior and determine how problem behaviors develop during intensive teaching and daily activities. Improved understanding of the "function" that the behavior serves provides guidance and for the selection of appropriate use of "extinction" for problem behavior and systematic methods for teaching replacement behaviors will be discussed. Data collection to measure treatment effectiveness will also be presented.
July 2004- Dr. Vince Carbone's Intro Workshop: Teaching Language to Children with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities Conducted by Vincent J. Carbone Board Certified Behavior Analyst This workshop presenter will describe the behavioral approach to teaching communication skills to children with autism and other developmental disabilities. This approach is based on B. F. Skinner's anallysis of verbal behavior and the research of Michael, Sundberg, Partington, and others. Participants in this workshop will learn [1] to conduct a Behavioral Language Assessment, [2] to select the most appropriate form of communication for a child or adult (vocal, signing, pointing to or exchanging pictures, or activating an augmentative device), and [3] to select the communication responses and supporting skills that should be taught first. The workshop will include the recommended teaching procedures for children who have no formal communication skills to children who are near conversational speakers. The presenter will also describle and demonstrate errorless teaching, specific quick-transfer (prompting and fading) procedures, and the use of both discrete trial training in the natural environment and during intensive teaching sessions. Many video tape demonstrations will be provided to illustrate the methods to increase spontaneous language and to develop conversational skills.
August 2004, October 2005 -Dr. Vince Carbone's Workshop #5: Teaching Verbal Behavior in a Classroom Setting Conducted by Gina Zecchin, M.S.Ed., BCaBA & Kelle Wood, M.Ed., BCBA This is a 3-day hands-on workshop for educators. The purpose of the workshop is to prepare educators to establish a classroom enviornment consistent with ABA principles that emphasizes the teaching of verbal behavior. The target audience for the workshop includes special education classroom teachers, teaching assistants, school administrators, psychologists, diagnosticians, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and others. The workshop attendance is limited to approximately 30 participants to insure sufficient time for individual attention and feedback. Each participant will be provided opportunities for guided practice in implementing the methods described in Dr. Carbone's Introductory Verbal Behavior Workshop #1 in a classroom setting. The participants will view videotape examples from actual classroom environments. In addition, important information related to organization of the classroom, group, ABA instructional methods, scheduling of 1-1 intensive teaching sessions, training of classroom assistants, ordering of required materials and other school-related topics will be discussed.
September 2004- Nuts/Bolts for Setting Up an ABA Educational Program for Children with Autism Conducted by Tamara Kasper, BCBA/SLPK This workshop will focus on assisting parents and therapists in organizing and documenting treatment goals. Come prepared to revitalize your "program book", organize your treatment materials and learn effective and concise methods of data collection and data display. These data collection, documentation and organizational strategies are the same methods recommended by Dr. Carbone and his associates and are based on treatment programs which use Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skillsby Doctors Sundberg and Partington as a curriculum guide. Bring your program book and treatment data for use in graphing your child's treatment progress.
November 2004- Kaufman Language Assessment and Promotion of Functional Speech in a Child with Autism conducted by Tamara Kasper, BCaBA/SLP Learn research-proven strategies to assist children with autism in developing speech and refining articulation skills. These strategies, based on research in the field of speech-language pathology and applied behavior analysis are especially appropriate for children who are experiencing difficulty in development of speech and may also have a diagnosis of "verbal apraxia". Methods for systematically shaping functional verbal communication in children with limited verbal imitation will be addressed. Application of Kaufman's hierarchy of vocalizations and use of simplified "word shells" with this population will also be explored. These strategies, viewed through the framework of Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior can be implimented into a home or school-based ABA program.
